Criminal Cases

This interactive tool, developed by the Justice Connection, showcases trends in case filing and clearance by the U.S. Department of Justice’s Legal Information Office Network System (LIONS). This dashboard highlights criminal cases filed by U.S. Attorney's Offices on behalf of the United States as plaintiff.

All data is from publicly released DOJ data, which ranges from October 1994 to July 2026 and will be updated on a monthly basis with information from LIONS. For more information about this data, see the footnote below or our data documentation page.
Program-category basis:

Each criminal case is tagged with one or more program categories.

To see all cases tagged with multiple program categories, toggle "all occurrences," which is how DOJ refers to this data. Note this will mean the bottom chart will add up to more than 100% and the same cases will be visualized multiple times in line charts.

To see case data tagged with their primary category - the first code entered for a case - select "primary only." All cases will only be counted once in charts.

When all categories are selected, topline metrics default to counting unique cases filed, regardless of program category.
